The Woodlands Area Quilt Guild General Meeting
August 6, 2008 |
PRESIDENT: Roberta Klvac
VICE-PRESIDENT: Lynn Schieber
TREASURER: Freda McDaniel
CO-TREASURER: Vacant
RECORDING SECRETARY: Jackie Yost
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: Eleanor Moland
INTRODUCTION: Roberta called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
She announced that the Christmas buckets were being passed. Roberta also
said the garage sale was a lot of fun and that this meeting was the last
time donations could be accepted for this fundraiser. Roberta stated
that a calendar for taking our quilt for a ride would be passed around
and that members should indicate times they would be available to do
this. Then when an opportunity arose, the committee would have an idea
of who might be available.
Roberta asked for a motion to approve the minutes as published in the
newsletter. Evelyn Huddleston motioned that the minutes be so approved
and Star Strahle seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Roberta then asked for the treasurer’s report to be approved as
published. Mary Carpenter moved that the treasurer’s report be so
approved and Kathy Cervenka seconded the motion. The motion passed.
GARAGE SALE: Lonnie Schlough
Lonnie said that the garage sale had been a great success and that she
wanted to thank the volunteers. She asked that anyone who had helped
with the garage sale stand and they were greeted with applause by the
members attending the meeting. The garage sale made $2,515 and donations
are still being received tonight. Rebekah has the forms for income tax
purposes for those who did not previously get one or who make a
contribution during the meeting.
Roberta announced that Plain and Fancy has moved and that postcards are
on a table to be picked up so that members can find the new location on
Budde Rd.
Roberta announced that the guild would again be sponsoring the Ethiopian
Quilt Project at the International Quilt Festival. Volunteers will get
free admission on the days for which they volunteer. Anyone volunteering
for at 6 hours gets early registration for next year’s classes. If you
were to volunteer for 3 hours on two different days, you would qualify
for early registration and you would have gotten two days’ free
admission. Information on the project is available. Anyone interested
should email or call Roberta.
Roberta announced that Patti Dixon took home some items from the garage
sale leftovers and will continue to accept things. She is making up grab
bags for the quilt show next June. Patti said that the grab bags at the
Kingwood show were a big hit. If you have items you were unable to get
to the garage sale, she will be glad to go through them for you. If
there are items suitable for the boutique, she will pass them along.
Roberta then announced that the board had voted unanimously to recommend
that dues be raised next year. The dues will be raised from $20 to $30
for regular members and from $15 to $20 for members over 65. The dues
for junior members will remain at $10 and members over 75 will continue
to have free membership.
QUILT SHOW: Cheryl Bennett
Cheryl requested that members try to step out of the box in thinking of
ways to make money at the quilt show. The kick-off will be the September
meeting. Roberta showed an apron which she hopes all members who work at
the show will wear. The aprons are to be made in bright and cheerful
floral or bug fabric. She handed out several kits to make aprons.
Roberta said she had already made about 15 and hopes to have 70 made for
the show. She will publish the directions in the newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP: Rebekah Casey
Rebekah announced that the new discount cards for JoAnn’s will be
available at the September meeting. There are 8 guests and 3 new members
in attendance tonight. The winner of the handmade name tag drawing was
Lonnie Schlough.
BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Patti Dixon
The winner of the blocks was Pat Battey.

Bennett, Terri Woodcock and Lindy Bingham.
WORKSHOPS: Judy Purgason, Amy De Pan
There are still a few places available for tomorrow’s workshop. The
September workshop will be with Elsie Campbell. In November Brenda
Papadakis will be here doing a “Dear Jane” workshop. In January we will
be dying our own batiks in a workshop. There are already some people
signed up for that workshop and Judy said there had been interest from a
lady from Arlington. Interested members need to sign up and pay for the
workshops as soon as possible.
Amy showed a large basket full of the charm squares which had been
turned in for the exchange. She will take anyone else’s within the next
week. The packets of charm squares will be distributed at the next
meeting.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Kytrena Tuttle
Kytrena announced that there will be a Christmas stocking challenge this
year. The pattern was emailed to members. And she has a few paper copies
for distribution. The stockings will hang at the Christmas party this
year and be voted on by monetary contributions. The money will be given
to CPS to purchase Christmas gifts. The stockings will also hang at the
quilt show next June and be voted on in the same manner. The stockings
and the June contributions will be donated to CPS for Christmas 2009.
Kytrena said that she is also still requesting quilts for Camp for All.
She would still like to contribute 50 in February.
BEEKEEPER: Debbie Bates
Debbie asked that members help in the greeting process for visitors and
new members. This would mean greeting people, introducing yourself,
taking them around and explaining what is happening at various tables,
and making sure that they have somewhere to sit.
BOUTIQUE: Mary Carpenter
Mary announced that the first workshop for the quilt show boutique will
be September 17th at the community center. She showed some rag bags or
purses which participants will be making. There will be both a day and
an evening workshop. There will be a sign-up sheet at the next meeting.
Roberta said that this could be the start of an evening bee for the
guild. The room is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
evenings without charge. So members could start out working on boutique
things and meet others interested in an evening bee.
COOKBOOK: Stephanie Patterson
The deadline for recipes has been extended until the end of the year.
For every recipe contributed, members will receive a ticket for a
drawing which will be held after the deadline. Stephanie and Roberta
asked that each member bring at least one recipe for an entrée or side
dish to the September meeting.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Roberta Klvac
Roberta introduced the winners of the scholarships or their relatives
who accepted for them.
SPECIAL EVENTS: Sharron Evans
Sharron announced that there are still some spaces left for the
September retreat at Aunt Faye’s. The cost is $144 which covers food.
She also said that she had arranged for a bus for preview night at
Festival. And she is trying to arrange a small bus to Winedale, TX for a
quilt turning at a museum there. This trip would be for around 20
people,
Roberta’s tip of the day was about cooking. She suggested that you
should mark recipes you use whether or not you liked them and what you
added or did differently. In the front of the cookbook you should write
the page numbers of the recipes you like.
SHOW AND TELL: Star Strahle, Wendy Smith
There was a large and wonderful show and tell this month.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jackie Yost
